Three Months' Checkup

Okay, not really.  It was really for his "spring" vaccines (which are not "shots", do not call them "shots", no one is "shooting" your animal /rant).  But it's been about three months since he had his pastern injected and I'd felt some weird shit over the last few weeks, so I asked my vet to prepare himself for an additional injection.  But let's back up.

The week of February 1st was utter shit for riding.  It just didn't happen and then Friday, the 5th, I went out to the barn to, you know, actually ride.  Archie was covered in small hives, but I figured a little walk in the cool air would do him some good.  I should say that my first thought was a giant nope.  Fuck my instincts, right?  He had four days off!  Horse must be ridden!

I tacked him up and mounted from the right side, as I alternate.  He had a few lurching steps and just felt like shit, so I immediately hopped off and checked him over.  No weirdness.  So I take him back to the mounting block and start to mount from the left side and the Kid buckles beneath me.  Like, now I've got half a foot stuck in the stirrup and I'm stumbling around on the other leg on the ground and Archie has suddenly developed the swayback of all swaybacks.  I pull his tack as I'm walking him into the barn and poke and prod him under the lights before dragging him off for the BM to poke and prod.  And the Kid is super sore.

I opted to give him the following week off, only linimenting his back, buting for a couple days, and shoving food in his face.  BM's hypersensitive about the weather right now, while trying to keep the new foal comfortable.  So I've found myself pulling extra blankets off of Archie periodically.  While we're out of town, she sends me a text photo of his shoulder, which is bald.  I ask if he's been bitten or if his blanket rubbed him raw.  She initially thought it was his blanket, but, you know, it actually looks like rain rot.

Secretly hoping that the Kid just got bit.  :(
By the time I got out to the barn on Sunday and pull the Kid out of his pasture, he is covered in rain rot.  All over his shoulders, under his mane, down his spine and along his ribcage, on the top of either side of his butt and on either side of his tail.  He's just lost chunks of hair.  I very, very gently worked some of the scabs free with my SleekEz, took off his extra blanket and sent him back out.  All I can figure is that he's been sweating under the extra blankets, as the Kid really hasn't been rained on.

When the vet came out on Monday, he almost didn't believe that it was rain rot until I showed him how well the SleekEz worked.  Turned the man into a believer.  I already have Malaseb and was directed to treat as normal and to get back on him as soon as he's no longer tender.  Kid needs to work.  Vet made a comment that stabbed me in the heart:  he's losing his topline and starting to look his age.  THE HORROR.

We discussed the ringbone and my thought that he needed another injection, but the vet felt that he looked too good in the ring to warrant it.  But he looked like shit on the grass.  So the new verdict is that we can walk in grass, but all of our "hard work" needs to be in the ring.  Maybe that'll change when the ground softens a bit.  Trail rides are still okay, in fact, advised due to the potential for straightness.  This is all getting really exciting, right?

  2. Boo that's a lot of winter ick. And I'm a nurse and totally use the term "shots", cause then I get to sing "shots shots shots shots" like a gangsta. ;) It is a short, rapid burst of medicine, like taking a shot. :)

  4. Ugghh, those dang toplines, mine lost his too, seemingly overnight. I think our boys are the same age. I found some neat exercises to help combat the problem on youtube.

  5. At least he's keeping you busy? But maybe find less interesting ways to keep your mom busy, Archie. Just saying.
