WTF is Whiskey?

A Contest.

Photo by the uber-amazing Britt Gillis.
So we all know that Whiskey is at least part Appaloosa.  He's got the characteristic butt blanket, white sclera, mottled skin on his muzzle, and striped hooves.  I mean, textbook.  But he's also almost 16.2, built like a tank with a neck to die for, has a fabulous mane and tail, and his solid legs are lightly feathered.  ...so maybe not all Appy.

I've officially sent off DNA to find out what exactly he is.  I wanted to get this post out before the results were back, so in writing this I'm not any more knowledgeable or biased.

Opinions/Evidence:

  • Farrier thought he was Appy x TB and now leans toward Appy x Andalusian (because after regular trims, he's actually got pretty good feed),
  • Vet thinks he might be Appy x Friesian,
  • And trainer thinks Appy x Saddlebred.

Rules:
Leave a comment guessing what the guy is.  All well-bred Appaloosa?  Appy crossed with something?  "Appy x Warmblood" will be ignored.  I want to know what wamblood you think he might be mixed with.  If multiple people guess the same correct answer, I'll pull at random from those responses.  If no one is close, I'll pull at random from all the answers.

Contest ends next Friday, January 26.  Winner announced whenever I get the results (immediately, if I've already gotten them, whenever if I haven't.)

Prize:
$25 gift card of your choice (Amazon, Riding Warehouse, or Smartpak).

  1. I LOVE when people do these DNA tests! I'm seriously obsessed with seeing the results. I feel like a couple other people will guess Appy/TB which would be my first guess, but instead I'm going to go with Appy/Oldenburg. Can't wait to find out! Is Appy/Certified Dream Boat a breed?

  2. I'm interested to see what it comes back with. I don't have any faith in those tests, because I had a friend send one in on an unknown horse and one in on a "known" registered DNA-verified horse as a control. It said her TB was part Trakehner, part QH, part TB, and the "unknown" horse was Trakehner/TB. Clearly it is not LOL, it's got a weird gaited thing going on. It's fun to see the results anyway though... I do think at least part it is accurate, just not 100%.

And since those tests seem to love to say Trakehner, I'll guess that for Whiskey. ;) I could see a lot of different "real" possibilities though, just looking at him.

  3. Most of the Apps I've known (unless they were registered POAs) were TALL. So I'm going to say he's a straight Appaloosa.

  4. He's a lovely horse. I'm going with your trainer - saddlebred...

  5. I think he's Appy x Friesian! I've known a couple Friesian crosses and he looks suspiciously similar to them plus the spots!

  6. Now that you mention it, I definitely see App X Saddlebred. The shape of his face and his fabulous tail remind me a lot of the Saddlebred next door!

  7. I'm going to put four in the mix, and fully accept I might be totally, absolutely wrong -- Appy / AQHA / Saddlebred / Draft (if you need specific draft... percheron)

  8. I'm going to go with Appy/Saddlebred/standardbred.

  9. Oooh, so interesting! My barn manager had this done on her Mustang and he's Selle Francais, Missouri Fox Trotter and a Spanish breed... Lusitano maybe?

  10. Ohhhh how fun! I am so excited to see what he is!

I think Lauren might be onto something with the multiple breeds. I can totally see all of everything mentioned, so my guess is that he is more than just two. But since I am having trouble deciding what three, I am going to go with what I think he looks like the most: appy x saddlebred!

  11. Straight appy...with that said it’s tricky because appy lines often have qh, Arab, tb mixed in there in the way back. Pongo was register purebred app & almost 16.3...they come in xl size too ;)

    1. This. Copper is registered App, but solid as they come, 16.2 and everyone mistakes him for a TBxQH. Almost all apps have a high percentage of TB and/or QH in them anyway, Copper is only 67% app and that means registration wise...of that 67% they are still high % QH and TB. It's kind of a rabbit hole.

  12. I'm jumping in with Appy/Holsteiner, cuz Cosmo has some feathers and a lovely mane and tail. I don't know if it's just him or Holsteiner, but it's my guess :)

  13. I LOVE HIM SO MUCH.

    I'm putting a pin in Appy/Morgan.

  14. Knowing how those DNA tests work...I'm going to say Appy/TB/Trakhener. :)

  15. I knew a couple of very tall, larger boned appys as a kid. I wish I had a picture of them, but sadly I do not. Since it is probably frowned upon to give more than one answer, I'll try to narrow it down. I had a friend send her pony's DNA in for testing and he came back as New Forest Pony, Shetland and Draft of some type (I'm thinking Belgian, but not 100% sure on that. We had a few Saddlebred jumpers in my trainer's barn growing up and they were catty little things.

All that rambling aside, I'm going to go to with: Appaloosa/Saddlebred/Andalusian

    1. Hmmm he does have the long back like a saddlebred, but that probably wouldn't give him the feathering and he's pretty solid looking. My vote is for App//Saddlebred//Morgan !

  19. AppxMorgan. His neck and head carriage makes me think Morgan.

  20. Appy x Andalusian is my guess, but I will bet the DNA comes back part QH as well.

  21. Ohhhh I'm really excited to see what he is! I'll guess Appy x standardbred x draft.

  22. I would say straight Appy, but I know that most "Appaloosa" horses are actually appys crossed with QH to put the spots on a QH build. So, I am going with Appy/QH.

  23. Appy x (TB x Oldenburg) or irish sport horse in there

  24. Appy and Cleveland Bay. Why not?

  25. My vote is Appy X Selle Francais :)

  27. I'm going to go out in left field for fun and say he's Appy x TWH. I've known a few Walkaloosas who didn't get the memo that they were supposed to be gaited. ;)
